There is also a series of four Education and Debate articles published in the BMJ in 2001 discussing the usefulness of using systems thinking, in particular, complex adaptive systems theory, to address some of the complexity issues within the NHS. These four articles, are not primary research, yet they are the ones consistently quoted by other researchers when exploring systems thing and healthcare organisations, in particular within the NHS. The first in the series is called ‘The challenge of complexity in healthcare’ by Plsek and Greenhalgh
